WHAT’S IT ABOUT

The film is set in a fantasy world populated with elves, trolls, mermaids, centaurs, fauns, satyrs, gnomes, sprites, goblins and other mystical creatures such as unicorns and dragons. This world, however, where fairy tale was once the reality, is losing its sense of magic.  Its inhabitants use machines such as mobile phones and cars instead of magic. Two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic in the world in order to spend one day with their father, who died when they were too young to remember him.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

The magic is not quite there for this Pixar film. Onward plays more like Disney trying to copy a Pixar film. It has all the necessary Disney cliché’s. Siblings that are opposite of each other, a single-parent home because of a tragic moment, a journey that involves a ton of stuff that creates self-awareness, self-discovery, and self-confidence, and finally a heart-warming, bring it all together because this is what you were waiting for, moment. Yes, it’s all there, but at times, it seems forced, out of place, or merely an amateuristic attempt at what it should be. For what it’s worth, Onward is entertaining but it starts off slow. Because of this, don’t expect any young kids to sit still while the movie is trying to develop the characters and give you reasons to care about what happens next. It does get progressively better but by mid-movie, you’ve stopped caring. Once that happens, the “quest” becomes tedious, the cuteness has worn off, and the story has a half-done feel to it. There used to be a time if a movie had Pixar above its name, you knew it was going to be great. Even if you felt like there was no way they could make something like that, make sense (talking about you Wall-E). But for years, they did it. They took what seemed like impossible ideas (like Ratatouille and UP) and made movie magic. Then they did the worse thing ever. They sold their soul to Disney in 2006, and nothing has been the same. The quality is not there, and the stories are lazy. But when they produced The Good Dinosaur, I knew it was over. In my opinion that has to be their worse film to date. Unfortunately, Pixar’s list of bad titles will soon outnumber the great ones, and Onward is destined to be on that lousy list.
